About Quiet Impact NYC
Quiet Impact NYC is a community alliance dedicated to raising public awareness about the effects of noise pollution on health, and empowering New Yorkers to help themselves and others create more livable indoor and outdoor urban spaces.
NOISE HURTS:
Noise pollution poses a threat to human health, and is associated with medical problems such as cardiovascular disease, hypertension, poor sleep quality, mental health disorders, and immune system disorders. There are also significant attendant economic costs to the health hazards of noise pollution.
Long-term community noise exposure in relation to dementia, cognition, and cognitive decline in older adults [Alzheimer's and Dementia, 2020]
Living in a noisy area has been linked to a higher chance of having mild cognitive impairment or Alzheimer's disease. For every 10 decibel increase in noise levels, the chances of having mild cognitive impairment went up by 36%, and the chances of having Alzheimer's disease went up by 29%.
Stress Hormone Changes in Persons exposed to Simulated Night Noise [Noise Health, 2003]
Playing music that makes you feel strongly upset or angry lowers the variation in your heart rate that is linked to your breathing (“respiratory sinus arrhythmia,”or RSV.) When people are stressed, their RSA tends to decrease.
